How we pack balikbayan boxes in Dubai (what actually works)
After years of pickups around Al Rashidiya and DIP, here’s the packing approach that survives sea transit without drama.
People overthink packing. Or they underthink it and stuff a jumbo box like it’s a suitcase for a weekend trip. Both end the same way: crushed corners, mixed smells, or a customs hold because something that “looked fine” wasn’t fine.
This isn’t a perfect laboratory guide. It’s what our warehouse guys in Dubai keep repeating to first-timers — and to regulars who still shove shampoo bottles next to clothes.
Start with the boring stuff
- Use a proper cargo carton (Bulilit / Medium / Jumbo). Soft bags tear on the long haul.
- Line the bottom with cardboard or old clothes. Not bubble wrap everywhere — just a base.
- Heavy items go low and centered. Don’t put a rice cooker on top of snack packs.
- Seal liquids in zip bags. Even “closed” bottles leak when the container heats up.
- Leave a little space. Overstuffed boxes bulge, then get crushed by the stack above.
What people forget
- Write the consignee’s full name the way it appears on their ID.
- Add a Philippine mobile number that actually answers.
- Keep a photo of the packed box and the waybill — saves arguments later.
- Check prohibited items before you seal. Perfume, aerosols, and batteries are the usual surprises.
Tip — If you’re sending for Christmas, pack earlier than you think. Sea lanes get busy and “I booked late” isn’t a customs excuse.
